This 1873 architectural study for the Williamsburg Savings Bank's dome is a rare window into the decorative ambitions of Gilded Age civic architecture — precise, richly coloured, and radiating the quiet confidence of an era that believed ornament was a moral duty. Peter Bonnett Wight was one of the most intellectually serious architects working in mid-nineteenth-century America, deeply shaped by John Ruskin's belief that honest craftsmanship and Gothic ornament were inseparable from good building. His presentation drawings were not mere technical documents; they were arguments made visible, using watercolour and gouache to demonstrate how surface decoration could carry meaning and dignity. This study shows that sensibility in full: the layered washes build depth and warmth, while the graphite underdrawing holds everything to disciplined geometry. Wight is perhaps best known for his National Academy of Design building in New York (1865), which brought Ruskinian Gothic to American public life and made his reputation before he was thirty. Translating a work like this into oil on canvas is a deliberate act of interpretation — our artists study the tonal relationships and the interplay of transparent and opaque passages that define the original, rendering the architectural vision in a medium that gives it new weight and presence on the wall.
