Wind-Swept Sands captures the raw, open poetry of Long Island's Shinnecock Hills — a landscape stripped to sky, sand, and moving air. William Merritt Chase spent his summers at Shinnecock from 1891 onward, running one of America's first outdoor painting schools and producing some of the most assured plein-air work of his generation. In this 1894 canvas he works with characteristic economy: broad, confident strokes build a luminous sky above pale dunes, and the absence of picturesque incident becomes the subject itself. Chase was deeply influenced by Velázquez and Whistler, and that lineage shows in how much atmosphere he wrings from relatively spare means. Shinnecock was not accidental — Chase chose the site deliberately for its expansive light and horizontal openness, qualities that rewarded the kind of swift, gestural painting he championed to his students. This hand-painted oil reproduction, executed on canvas using traditional oil pigments, preserves the tonal restraint and brushwork energy that make the original so quietly commanding — giving you the feel of standing in that coastal wind rather than looking at a photograph of it.
