Delacroix captured the Manola — a figure from Madrid's working-class districts, famous for her bold traditional dress — with an intimacy that feels more like a private sketch than a formal portrait. The work dates from 1832, the same year Delacroix joined a French diplomatic mission to Morocco and made a brief stop in Spain. The encounter with North African and Iberian culture fundamentally altered his palette and his sense of what paint could do. Here he worked in gouache and watercolor over graphite, a combination that allowed rapid, luminous layering, and traces of scraping are visible where he corrected or refined — evidence of a mind thinking through the image in real time. The result has a warmth and spontaneity rarely achieved in oil painting of the period. The costume itself is documented in his Spanish notebooks: Delacroix made multiple studies of the Manola's distinctive dress, fascinated by the contrast between its formal structure and the unguarded energy of the women who wore it. Our hand-painted oil reproduction translates the original's intimacy into a more permanent medium, preserving the loose confidence of Delacroix's line and the richness of his colour while giving the image the depth and presence that oil on canvas naturally provides.
