Lazzaro Tavarone trained in Genoa under Luca Cambiaso, one of the most inventive draughtsmen of the Italian late Renaissance, and the influence shows throughout his work. The layered technique here — red chalk as the structural foundation, brown ink defining form, white gouache lifting the light — is a masterclass in how Mannerist artists built luminosity before a single brushstroke of paint. Tavarone handles the mythological subject with a draughtsman's precision rather than a painter's spectacle, giving the encounter between Zeus and Psyche an almost tender, studied quality that large-scale fresco cycles rarely allow. Tavarone spent time working in Spain, contributing to decorative cycles at El Escorial, which brought his Genoese sensibility into contact with the grander ambitions of the Spanish court — an experience that deepened his already sophisticated handling of figural composition.
