A Deputation from the Whitefriars is a fine example of Charles Samuel Keene's command of the drawn line — precise, characterful, and alive with the quiet comedy of Victorian professional life. Keene spent over three decades as one of Punch magazine's most celebrated contributors, and his draughtsmanship was admired by artists as serious as Whistler and Degas. Working in pen and brown ink with white gouache highlights, he built scenes through layered, energetic linework rather than tonal wash, giving his figures a wiry immediacy that photographs of the era couldn't match. The faint squaring visible beneath the composition tells us this was prepared for engraved reproduction — a glimpse into the practical craft behind Victorian illustration. Keene was famously reluctant to exhibit or sell his original drawings, preferring to keep them as working documents, which makes surviving pieces like this one all the more rare.
