A Game of Cards captures the quiet absorption of Victorian leisure with the intimacy and wit that made Charles Samuel Keene one of the most admired draughtsmen of his era. Keene spent over three decades as a principal illustrator for Punch, developing a sharp, affectionate eye for the textures of everyday middle-class life. His technique here — pen and brown ink reinforced with gray wash and delicate touches of white gouache — shows the layered discipline behind what can look effortless: tonal depth built up carefully beneath the confident line work. The result is a scene that feels observed rather than composed, as though the card players are unaware of being watched. Keene was held in unusually high regard by fellow artists; both Whistler and Degas expressed deep admiration for his draftsmanship, a recognition that set him apart from illustrators who were dismissed as craftsmen rather than artists. Because the original is a work on paper, translating it into oil requires more than mere copying — it demands an understanding of how the wash and ink create atmosphere, and how to carry that mood into a wholly different medium. This hand-painted reproduction does exactly that, rendering Keene's gentle observation in pigment that will last for generations.
