"And So He Rested on the Lonely Ground" carries a quiet melancholy that feels almost literary — a solitary figure at rest, rendered in the muted warmth of brown and gray gouache with delicate white highlights that give the composition its hushed, contemplative glow. Will Hicock Low was one of the most accomplished American artists of the Gilded Age, trained in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme and deeply shaped by the French academic tradition. He brought that rigorous draughtsmanship back to America alongside a lyrical sensibility that leaned toward poetry and myth. Working in gouache on laminate board, as he does here, allowed Low to achieve subtle tonal gradations — a technique demanding precise control, closer in spirit to drawing than to painting. Low was a lifelong friend of Robert Louis Stevenson, and their correspondence and collaboration are among the better-documented literary-artistic friendships of the era, suggesting Low moved comfortably between visual and written worlds.
