Blarney captures Charles Samuel Keene at his most assured — a small-scale work crackling with the wit and observational sharpness that made him one of Victorian Britain's most celebrated draughtsmen. Keene spent over three decades contributing to Punch magazine, where his pen-and-ink illustrations earned a devoted following among readers and fellow artists alike. His working method was meticulous: he built compositions in black chalk, then worked over them in brown ink, using white gouache to correct and refine passages — a layered process visible in this very sheet, now held in the Art Institute of Chicago. The result carries an energetic, lived-in quality that sets his work apart from more polished contemporaries, each line feeling considered yet uncontrived. Edgar Degas was a known admirer of Keene's draftsmanship and collected his work, a measure of the esteem in which Keene was held beyond Britain's shores. This hand-painted oil reproduction translates Keene's intricate linework and subtle tonal range into the warmth of oil on canvas, preserving the expressive character of the original while giving it a physical presence and depth that suits any interior. Each brushstroke is applied by hand, ensuring no two reproductions are identical.
