"Cannie!" captures the tender rapport between a person and their dog with the unpretentious warmth that made Charles Samuel Keene one of the most beloved illustrators of Victorian England. Keene spent more than three decades as the principal draughtsman for Punch magazine, producing hundreds of pen-and-ink drawings that depicted everyday working-class life with uncommon sympathy and wit. This work's layered technique — pen and brown ink underpinning washes of warm brown, with delicate white gouache highlights pulling out the light — reveals the sophistication behind what appears, at first glance, entirely effortless. The drawing rewards close attention: there is real weight in the shadows and genuine tenderness in the animal's posture. Among his admirers were Whistler and Degas, both of whom spoke of Keene as one of the great draughtsmen of the century — a reputation that has quietly outlasted the more celebrated names of his era. The hand-painted oil reproduction carries this warmth into a new medium, translating the tonal richness of the original wash work into oils that preserve both the intimacy of the scene and the character of Keene's masterful line.
