*Dedication (for Lamia)* carries the quiet authority of a work made not to impress but to honour — a restrained, monochromatic composition in which black, white, and grey gouache conjure depth and feeling without a single note of colour. Will Hicok Low was one of the most refined American painters of the late nineteenth century, trained in Paris under Carolus-Duran and deeply shaped by the French academic tradition. He became closely associated with the Aesthetic Movement, bringing a poet's sensibility to his decorative and illustrative work. This piece, created as a dedication for an edition of Keats' *Lamia*, shows his ability to match visual mood to literary atmosphere — the muted palette and delicate handling feeling inseparable from the dreamlike, mythological world Keats inhabited. Low enjoyed a lasting friendship with Robert Louis Stevenson, who praised his work warmly; the two met in France and remained close throughout their careers, a connection that speaks to Low's standing among the literary and artistic circles of the era. The hand-painted oil reproduction translates the tonal subtlety of the original gouache with careful attention to its graduated greys and the fine, considered mark-making that gives the work its contemplative character.
