This preparatory study for the title page of Punch's fifty-fifth volume offers a rare glimpse into the working process of one of Victorian illustration's most accomplished draughtsmen. Charles Samuel Keene spent four decades contributing to Punch, and his reputation rested on an extraordinary technical precision that set him apart from his contemporaries. Working here in pen and brown ink over graphite, with delicate touches of white gouache on warm buff paper, he built up form with the same economy and confidence that characterised his published work. The layered media — each material serving a distinct purpose in constructing tone and edge — reveals a craftsman who understood exactly what every mark was for. Keene's draftsmanship was quietly celebrated among fellow artists well beyond the readership of Punch; both Whistler and Degas expressed admiration for his work, recognising in it a rigour that popular illustration rarely demanded.
