Fuseli's 1794 canvas catches Milton at his most vulnerable and most powerful — blind, dependent, yet commanding the room with the weight of the words he shapes aloud. Henry Fuseli was one of the defining figures of British Romanticism, drawn obsessively to literary and mythological subjects he could push into high drama. His technique leaned on strong chiaroscuro and Michelangelesque figuration, giving his subjects a sculptural, almost stage-lit presence. In this work, that theatricality serves the subject perfectly: Milton's sightless gaze and raised hand carry an authority that his daughter's bent, transcribing figure quietly underscores. The composition does not sentimentalise the scene — it dignifies it. Fuseli was so consumed by Milton's writing that he devoted an entire exhibition to the project: the Milton Gallery, which opened in 1799 and eventually comprised over forty paintings drawn from the poet's works. This canvas was among the early studies that fed that obsession. Now held in the Art Institute of Chicago, the original rewards close looking in ways that prints cannot replicate.
