This late Gothic panel radiates the solemn authority of northern French devotional painting at its peak — Saint Honoré rendered with the quiet gravity befitting a bishop-saint venerated across the Picardy region for over a millennium. Produced around 1495 for the Charterhouse of Saint-Honoré at Thuison-les-Abbeville, the work belongs to a tradition of French panel painting deeply shaped by Flemish influence. The anonymous artist demonstrates the characteristic northern precision of the period: crisp, jewel-like colour, meticulous attention to ecclesiastical vestments, and a gold ground that anchors the figure in sacred rather than earthly space. Carthusian patronage encouraged a restrained, contemplative aesthetic, and the panel reflects that — nothing is decorative without purpose. The altarpiece panels are now dispersed across several major institutions, with the Art Institute of Chicago holding key sections — a reminder of how liturgical ensembles, once inseparable from their architectural setting, have been scattered across centuries of upheaval and collection. Our hand-painted oil reproduction is made to order on quality canvas or panel, faithfully replicating the tonal depth, warm ochres, and precise linework of the original. Each piece is executed by a trained artist working directly from high-resolution archival sources, giving you a work that holds the spirit of the 15th-century original.
