Few paintings capture the quiet dignity of rural labour as tenderly as Millet's depiction of farmworkers carrying a newborn calf home across an open field at dusk. Millet spent most of his career in the village of Barbizon, where he lived and worked alongside the peasants he painted — giving his figures a weight and sincerity that sets them apart from the romanticised peasantry common in academic painting of the time.
