Painted during one of John Singer Sargent's extended summers in the Italian countryside, *The Fountain, Villa Torlonia, Frascati, Italy* captures the dappled light and languid atmosphere of a formal garden with the kind of effortless immediacy that defined his mature work. Sargent painted this canvas en plein air in 1907, working in the grounds of the Torlonia estate in the Castelli Romani hills southeast of Rome — a retreat favoured by wealthy Romans escaping the summer heat. His brushwork here is characteristically loose and assured: broad strokes of cool shadow play against warm reflected light, the stone fountain dissolving slightly into the surrounding greenery as though seen through half-closed eyes. It is painting at the speed of perception, not deliberation. Sargent returned to Italy repeatedly throughout his career, and scholars note that his Italian plein air works from this period represent some of the freest and most personal paintings he ever made — a counterpoint to the formal portraiture that made his name.
