*The Golden Age* presents Poynter's vision of a mythological paradise with the luminous stillness that made Victorian classicism so compelling — figures moving softly through a sunlit landscape that feels both ancient and dreamlike. Sir John Edward Poynter was one of the defining voices of British academic painting, trained in Paris under Charles Gleyre alongside Whistler and du Maurier before rising to become President of the Royal Academy and Director of the National Gallery. His classical scenes are distinguished by exacting draughtsmanship and a painter's sensitivity to light — he never let archaeological precision crowd out atmosphere. In this work, the warm palette and carefully orchestrated figures draw on Hesiod's concept of a long-vanished age of harmony, rendered with the craftsmanship of someone who believed antiquity deserved the same reverence as scripture. Poynter was a significant influence on Alma-Tadema, and the two shared a devotion to recreating classical life with the material richness it deserved — a collaboration of admiration as much as rivalry.
