Renoir's *Seascape* (1879) captures the restless energy of open water with the kind of luminous immediacy that only Impressionism could achieve. By the late 1870s, Renoir was at the height of his Impressionist powers, drawn like many of his contemporaries to the Normandy coast, where the shifting light and constant motion of the sea demanded exactly the kind of rapid, instinctive brushwork he had mastered. In *Seascape*, he renders waves not as fixed forms but as fleeting impressions — broken strokes of blue, grey, and white that seem to move as you look at them. The horizon sits low, giving the sky an expansive presence that feels almost as alive as the water below. The painting entered the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it remains one of the quieter jewels among its Impressionist holdings — less celebrated than Renoir's figure paintings, but no less accomplished in its confidence and economy. A skilled hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas preserves what makes the original so compelling: the textured, tactile surface that no print can replicate, and the layered colour that shifts subtly depending on the light in the room. It is the closest thing to standing in front of the original in Chicago.
